Old South Baton Rouge Neighborhood & Economic
Revitalization Strategy
Client: Baton Rouge Area
Foundation
RKG Associates, Inc. assembled a team of national and local consultants to
develop a economic and neighborhood revitalization strategy for a historic
African-American neighborhood located between Louisiana State University (LSU)
and Downtown Baton Rouge. The strategy was developed after an
intensive public process, which was able to revive the optimistic spirits of
community residents and created a strategic partnership between community
leaders and the client, Plan Baton Rouge, a non-profit revitalization
organization created by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. RKG prepared an
analysis of real estate and retail market conditions and led the efforts of
other consultants in creating a comprehensive and innovative strategy based
on: (1) neighborhood conservation, (2) historic preservation and design
standards, (3) stabilization and recreation of residential neighborhoods,
and (4) riverfront redevelopment. The plan also called for the creation of
an Old South Baton Rouge Revitalization Partnership linking the resources
and commitment of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, City of Baton Rouge, and
LSU with the residents of Old South Baton Rouge.
